What is a twist thermometer and how does it work?
A twist thermometer is a sealed glass vessel containing a colored liquid. As the temperature of the liquid increases or decreases, the volume of this sealed liquid will change proportionately. A graduated scale is printed on the spout with ascending temperatures listed. To read the thermometer, observe the level of the colored liquid in the “spout” and the printed temperature that is closest to it. As the temperature lowers, the liquid will retract into the center of the vessel to show a lower temperature. As the temperature increases, the liquid line will move further out from the center.
Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His findings provided the framework for Newton’s laws of motion and Einstein’s theory of relativity. His discovery that the density and volume of a liquid changes in proportion to its temperature, inspired the invention and explains the accuracy of this thermometer.
